This year’s Super Bowl will reportedly be the first to be powered entirely by renewable energy, thanks to a deal between the host stadium and a solar power facility.

More than 621,000 solar panels discovered in a desert wasteland in Nevada are helping power Allegiant Stadium, home of the Las Vegas Raiders and host of Super Bowl III, multiple sources say. The media reported.

According to the stadium’s website, the stadium is 100% “powered by renewable energy sourced in Nevada.”

According to CBS News, Les Vegas Stadium has signed a 25-year agreement with NV Energy to purchase power from a new solar installation.

NV Energy CEO Doug Cannon told CBS that the solar panel installation will generate enough electricity to power 60,000 homes.

For an event like the Super Bowl, solar panels need to generate 10 megawatts, which is enough to power 46,000 homes.

Is renewable energy reliable or will there be power outages during games?

According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, more than 20% of the U.S. electricity will come from renewable energy in 2022.

Solar power generation relies heavily on sunlight. Therefore, it may not be the best option for cities with low amounts of sunlight. However, Forbes reports that some of the best solar panels are energy efficient even on cloudy days.

Fortunately, the Nevada desert receives about 300 days of sunlight per year.

“People can be nervous about renewable power because they don’t know if it’s reliable or not,” said U.S. Energy Secretary Jennifer Granholm, who toured the stadium’s main electrical entrance room, as reported by CBS News. Because of that.” “The fact that renewable electricity can reliably power a facility like this should speak volumes about what will happen in other communities.”

The stadium has also implemented other sustainability initiatives.

“Sustainability was a top priority during the construction process of Allegiant Stadium,” the stadium’s website states.

According to the webpage, the roof is made of ethylenetetrafluoroethylene (ETFE), a recyclable plastic material with climate adaptability, insulation performance, self-cleaning properties, long lifespan, and more energy-efficient features. It is said to be one of the

We also have a way to dispose of food debris so it doesn’t end up in a landfill.

The website says they collect an average of 12,000 pounds of kitchen scraps and food scraps per event. They are then donated to local livestock farms where they are used as animal feed.

This isn’t the first time a host stadium has tried to curb the amount of waste produced.

In 2020, the last time the Kansas City Chiefs played in Miami against the San Francisco 49ers, Hard Rock Stadium was built to ensure that all waste ended up in recycling centers, compost facilities, or factories where the waste was located. The aim was to achieve zero waste by ensuring that it was disposed of. It was burned for energy, reports National Geographic.
