Google One has as many paid subscribers as YouTube

summary

  • Google One has reached 100 million subscribers, but it still falls short of Apple’s 1 billion paid subscribers.
  • Google recently launched a new AI Premium plan for Google One that offers AI features such as Gemini Advanced.
  • Google One offers various storage tiers starting at $2 per month, with additional benefits like Google Support and premium Google Photo editing features.

Google recently celebrated a major milestone for its paid YouTube service. Earlier this month, the company announced that he had surpassed 100 million paid subscribers on YouTube Music and Premium. That’s impressive in itself, but it’s still less than half of Spotify’s 210 million paying subscribers. Within days of celebrating this milestone, another of Google’s paid subscriptions passed the 100 million subscriber user base. Google One.

Google CEO Sundar Pichai announced in a post on X on February 9 that Google One has surpassed 100 million subscribers. His announcement came a day after the company launched a new Google One AI Premium plan for $20 per month that gives him access to Gemini Advanced, 2TB drive storage, and other perks. Gemini AI access will also soon be available in Docs, Gmail, and other Google services as part of this plan.

The cheapest Google One tier in the US costs $2 per month. This gives subscribers an additional 100 GB of space, priority access to Google Support, Family Sharing, premium Google Photo editing features, dark web monitoring, and more. The $3 tier increases storage to 200 GB. Additional tiers offer over 2 TB of storage and free VPN access, starting at $10 per month.

Google does not bundle YouTube Premium or Nest Aware memberships with Google One. In September 2023, rumors surfaced that Google was working on an all-in-one bundle that would combine all of its subscription services. But since then, there has been little news in this regard.

Google’s paid membership base is impressive, but it’s far behind Apple’s. The latter service business surpassed 1 billion paid members in Q2 2023 across Apple Music, Apple One, and iCloud+ (via TechCrunch).

In addition to YouTube Music, Premium, and Google One, YouTube TV is also Google’s popular paid streaming service. It’s apparently the largest live TV cable subscription service in the U.S., and reportedly surpassed 6 million paying members in the first quarter of 2023.

Considering the popularity of Gmail, Drive, and Google Photos, Google One should have had more than 100 million paid members a long time ago. With the addition of Gemini Advanced to Google One, Google’s subscription bundles are likely to grow even more among advanced consumers in the future. The company is also locking many advanced features, such as Magic Eraser, behind the One subscription rather than offering them for free, locking in more users with monthly subscriptions.
