If you see the words “SOS” in your iPhone’s status bar, it means it’s not connected to your phone. And this can be quite frustrating if you know you’re in a place where you should be receiving a signal.
Basically, when your phone displays SOS and usually cellular bars, it means there is no network connection. For iPhone 14 and iPhone 15 owners, this is less of an issue. Because thanks to the features Apple has put into these devices, you can use the built-in satellite connection to send emergency texts. But older iPhones are out of luck.
If you’re in a remote area where reception is known to be poor, for example if you’re hiking or traveling to a remote location, you don’t necessarily need to worry. However, if the SOS indicator appears at other times, it is an issue that requires troubleshooting.
If you know you’re in an area with strong connectivity, there are some simple solutions you can try to get your phone to recognize your cellular connection. If the problem persists and the SOS notification persists, first toggle cellular data control and then restart your phone.

1. Check your cellular connection.

Access Command Center on your iPhone. Swipe down from top right iPhone screen. Tap on the mobile data icon Turn off your mobile phone connection by checking the box on the left. (This is the antenna that should be green.) tap again To turn it back on.
Note that if you tap and hold the control, it may zoom in.
2. Restart your iPhone

If you still see SOS in your iPhone’s status bar, Try restarting your iPhone Check to see if it reconnects to the network. Place your fingers on the right side button and left volume down button on your iPhone. Press both buttons at the same time for 3 seconds. When you see the restart screen, use the slider at the top to turn off your iPhone.
Please wait a little — 10 seconds is enough — and press the side button Turn your iPhone back on.
If these methods do not resolve the issue, there may be an issue with your SIM card. At that point, you will need to contact Apple or your wireless carrier for assistance.
