The 6.1-inch iPhone 15 and 6.7-inch iPhone 15 Plus (measured diagonally to the display) have the same general design as the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Plus, but with more contoured edges and a better feel in the hand. The feel of the device has changed over time, giving the new iPhone a more modern look that sets it apart from last year’s models.
Little has changed in terms of specific dimensions. The iPhone 15 measures 5.81 inches (147.6 mm) high and 2.82 inches (71.6 mm) wide, while the iPhone 15 Plus measures 6.33 inches (160.9 mm) high and 3.06 inches (77.8 mm) wide. Both models are 0.31 inches (7.80 mm) thick, and the iPhone 15 weighs 6.02 ounces (171 grams) and the iPhone 15 Plus weighs 7.09 ounces (201 grams).
iPhone 15 models feature an all-glass front and a colorful matte glass back framed by a color-matched aerospace-grade aluminum frame. Available colors include black, blue, green, yellow, and pink. This year, Apple used a new process that injects color across the back glass. This process was enhanced by what Apple calls a “dual ion exchange process.” There is no (PRODUCT)RED model at this time, but perhaps one will be released next year.
Last year, Apple added a Dynamic Island to the iPhone 14 Pro that replaces the notch at the top of the display, and this year the pill-shaped Dynamic Island has been expanded to iPhone 15 models. Dynamic islands take up less space than notches, giving you more viewing area.
A set of antenna bands are located on the top and side of the phone, with a power button on the right and volume buttons and a mute switch on the left. Apple replaced the mute switch with an action button on iPhone 15 Pro models, but not on standard iPhone 15 models. There is a 5G mmWave antenna under the power button, but this is limited to iPhone 15 models sold in the US.
The speaker hole and microphone are on the bottom of the iPhone 15 models, and another big design change is the addition of a USB-C port. The USB-C port has been replaced by a Lightning port as Apple has switched to USB-C charging technology.iPhones have SIM slots in some countries, but physical SIMs have been discontinued in the US
The camera bump on the back of the iPhone remains largely unchanged, with a diagonal lens setup for the wide and ultrawide cameras, as well as a True Tone flash and microphone.
Waterproof/dustproof
iPhone 15 and 15 Plus are rated IP68 against water and dust ingress. The smartphone can withstand depths of up to 6 meters (19.7 feet) for up to 30 minutes.
The 6 in the IP68 number stands for dust resistance (meaning the iPhone 15 can withstand dirt, dust, and other particulates), and the 8 stands for water resistance. IP6x is the highest rating for dust resistance in existence. The IP68 rating allows iPhone 15 to withstand splashes, rain, and accidental water exposure, but avoid intentional water exposure.
According to Apple, water and dust resistance are not permanent conditions and can degrade over time with normal use. Apple’s standard warranty does not cover liquid damage, so be careful if you come into contact with liquid.
