Ax-3’s splashdown off the coast of Florida puts Axiom Space at the forefront of developing the world’s first commercial space station and concludes the first pan-European commercial space mission, demonstrating international cooperation and progress in space exploration.
After undocking from the International Space Station (ISS) on Wednesday, February 7, the crew of Axiom Mission 3 (Ax-3) safely splashdowned aboard the ship off the coast of Florida. space x Dragon spacecraft on February 9, 2024 at 8:30 a.m. ET. During the 18-day mission docked at the ISS, the Ax-3 crew lived and worked in an orbiting laboratory conducting more than 30 different experiments and more than 50 outreach activities. Human research data collected during the flight, as well as on the ground before and after the mission, will improve our understanding of human physiology on Earth and in microgravity.
Ax-3 proves that Europe’s Community of Spaceflight States is a pioneer in the burgeoning commercial space industry. The crew and the government they represent are taking a bold step into a new era of leadership in low Earth orbit.
Exploring the future of spaceflight
Ax-3 is celebrating many firsts. This was the first commercial spaceflight mission comprised of domestic astronauts sponsored by the government and ESA. Mission specialist Alpel Gezeravcü became the first Turkish astronaut in history. Mission Specialist Marcus Want was the first ESA project astronaut to fly on a commercial space mission.
Ax-3 is the third in Axiom Space’s proposed series of human spaceflight missions and represents an important milestone toward the realization of Axiom Station, the world’s first commercial space station.
Axiom Space plays a critical role in providing human spaceflight opportunities to the greater international community. These missions will enable governments, individuals, researchers, academic institutions, and organizations around the world to conduct comprehensive scientific research, technology demonstrations, and support activities in the unique environment of microgravity.
Axiom Space’s first three missions to the ISS, with support from ESA, included crews from the United States, Spain, Israel, Canada, Saudi Arabia, Italy, Turkiye, and Sweden. Additionally, last year Axiom Space signed an MOU with ESA and the UK Space Agency to explore future human spaceflight opportunities.
