Thierry Breton, the EU’s internal market commissioner, was asked in an interview on LCI TV about Saturday’s comments by Trump, who is likely to be the Republican candidate in this year’s U.S. presidential election.

“Depending on this election, the U.S. presidential election, we can’t flip a coin on security every four years,” Brereton said, adding that European Union leaders are confident the EU will increase its military spending and capabilities. He added that he understands what needs to be done.

Polish Defense Minister Wladysław Kosiniak-Kamisz also spoke out.

“NATO’s motto ‘One for all, all for one’ is a concrete promise. To undermine the trust of allies means to weaken NATO as a whole,” he said on social media platform X. said.

“No campaign is an excuse to toy with the security of our alliance.”

Officials at NATO headquarters in Brussels did not respond to requests for comment. The NATO treaty includes provisions guaranteeing mutual defense in the event of attack on member states.

Expanding

Speaking at a political rally in South Carolina on Saturday, President Trump appeared to recall meetings with North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) leaders, including the president of a “large country” he did not name. “If we don’t pay, we’re being attacked by Russia – will you protect us?”

“I said, ‘Are you not paying? Are you delinquent?’ He said, ‘Yes, let’s say that happened.’ ‘No, I won’t protect you. In fact, I encourage them to do whatever they want. You have to pay.”

“We’ve heard it before… there’s nothing new under the sun,” Breton said, adding:

Referring to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and a conversation she had with President Trump in 2020, Breton said: “Maybe he has memory problems. In fact… “This was not a woman president of a country, but a woman president of the European Union.” .

Asked about President Trump’s comments, White House Press Secretary Andrew Bates said, “Encouraging a brutal regime to invade its closest allies is horrifying, anarchy, and threatens the national security of the United States and the world.” It is endangering the stability of the country and the domestic economy.”
