Tesla has rolled out an important update that improves Phone Key functionality for iPhone users by adopting Ultra Wideband (UWB) technology.
This advancement is detailed in Tesla’s latest software update, version 2024.2.3, which highlights that the vehicle and iPhone can now communicate with unprecedented precision. This enhancement improves the responsiveness of locking, unlocking, and automatic door operations.
Tesla advises users to upgrade their phone keys via the Tesla app by following simple steps to switch from Bluetooth to UWB connectivity. This upgrade requires an iPhone 11 or later model with UWB and the latest Tesla app version 4.29.5 or later.
The introduction of this feature is selective and is currently available on the latest Model 3, 2023 Model X, and Cybertruck, indicating that these models are equipped with the necessary UWB technology. Even though all updated Model S and Model X vehicles have UWB frequencies included in their Certificate of Compliance, these models still do not have access to the upgraded phone key functionality.
Additionally, some Android devices with UWB are not supported, so this update is only beneficial for iPhone users.
This update represents Tesla’s commitment to leveraging advanced technology to improve the user experience, especially to cater to the significant number of iPhone users among Tesla owners.
Although this move stops short of integrating Apple’s Car Key functionality into Apple Wallet, it still represents a significant improvement in vehicle access convenience and security.
Tesla’s adoption of UWB in Phone Key highlights the potential for car and smartphone technologies to further work together to improve functionality and user experience.
