Google One limits access to Gemini Advanced on family plans

What you need to know

  • Earlier this week, Google released Gemini Advanced, a more capable version of its AI chatbot powered by the Ultra 1.0 model.
  • Gemini Advanced is available through the Google One AI Premium Plan, a $20 monthly subscription service.
  • Most benefits of the Google One AI Premium plan can be shared with up to five people, but one notable exception is Gemini Advanced.

Google on Thursday overhauled its AI efforts, rebranding Bard to Gemini. With this change, the company released his Gemini Advanced. This is an advanced version of the standard Gemini chatbot, powered by Ultra 1.0, Google’s most powerful AI model to date. The problem is that Gemini Advanced is locked behind a paywall.

Google has added a new plan to its subscription service called Google One AI Premium. Basically, the subscription includes everything in the previous high-end tier, Google One Premium. Additionally, Google One AI Premium users have access to Gemini Advanced and many other AI features. These subscribers will have first access to upcoming AI features, including Gemini in Workspace.

However, users who subscribed to the Google One AI premium plan found that they could not share Gemini Advanced access with other users. Most benefits of the plan can be shared with up to 5 other users, but Gemini Advanced cannot. If you look at Google One’s plan and price breakdown, it’s not clearly revealed.

Google provides more details in the Google One help article instead. Here, the company states that only family plan administrators can use Gemini Advanced. This is important considering this is the main selling point of Google One AI Premium over the standard premium plan.

This development complicates Google’s pricing model. Google One AI Premium costs $20 per month, which is $10 more than the regular Google One Premium plan. The top AI plan included everything in a Google One premium subscription, so it was initially considered a great value. However, if you want to share your Gemini Advanced access with up to five other people, you’re out of luck.

However, this is not surprising. Competing AI subscription services also don’t allow you to share their benefits with others. For example, OpenAI’s ChatGPT Plus and Microsoft’s Copilot Pro both cost $20 per month and cannot be shared with family members. Therefore, Google One AI Premium is still a better value than these plans.

However, some Google One AI premium users were apparently expecting Gemini Advanced access to be shared with the family plan. In a post on Reddit, several users are confused to learn that Gemini Advanced cannot be shared.

I’m interested to see if other AI-related benefits can be shared, such as Workspace’s Gemini. At this time, Google does not discuss this in their support article as it is not yet available.
