summary
- Since 2014, eight U.S. airports have discontinued flights to Europe.
- Last departure from Fairbank, Fort Lauderdale, San Jose (California) was in 2023.
- Indianapolis Airlines’ only offering was Delta Air Lines’ offering of SkyTeam to Paris CDG, which did not return after the pandemic.
Some of the 41 U.S. airports plan to offer nonstop scheduled passenger flights to Europe in 2024. Naturally, New York JFK, Newark, Chicago O’Hare, Boston, and Washington Dulles have the highest frequency of flights. But what about airports that aren’t so lucky?
No more flights to Europe
Analyze all flights to Europe using Cirium data From 2014 indicates that the airports listed in the table below have suspended service across the North Atlantic. Further back, other cities such as Memphis will inevitably be included. note that:
- To avoid more asterisks, I haven’t provided all the details like route, dates, where I went, etc., but I’ve mentioned some examples for context.
- For the same reason, I chose not to state the exact year each airline or route ended, but instead simply state the most recent year.

British Airways in Fort Lauderdale
British Airways in Fort Lauderdale is profitable. It began operating from London Gatwick Airport in July 2017, with its final flight in September 2019. It would have been operated only by Norwegian, which has been operating between Gatwick and Fort Lauderdale since July 2014. BA’s entry was entirely defensive.

After Norwegian switched to Miami flights in March 2019 to increase revenue and increase visibility among international passengers, BA quickly ended its operations in Fort Lauderdale. Norwegian subsequently canceled all long-haul flights due to huge financial losses, and its successor, North Atlantic (which also served Fort Lauderdale before moving to Miami) learned its lesson. It seems like you haven’t learned everything.

Delta Air Lines launched Indianapolis-Paris CDG service in May 2018, supplying flights to partner airlines such as Air France from the giant SkyTeam hub in Europe. The flight operated daily in the summer and three times a week in the winter using a 767-300ER.

According to U.S. Department of Transportation T-100 data, the T-100 carried approximately 149,000 passengers and had an average seat fill of only 71% over its lifetime. Best SLF was only 85% in his one month (June 2019). Even though the number of flights was much lower, it was below 80% in almost all months, even in July, August and winter.

Analysis: Delta’s top 10 airports in early 2024
The airline is the largest airline at seven of the top 10 airports.
Was BA planning an Indianapolis flight?
According to the Summer 2022 Airport Coordination Limited Slots Report, BA had applied for a slot to fly daily flights between London Heathrow Airport and Indianapolis. After all, Indianapolis and Europe are moderately sized markets, Delta Air Lines has suspended flights to Paris, and London is the most sought-after city. However, the typical problem is that there are many one-stop options.
It appears that the airline historically had two slots allocated to this route, but was not granted the additional five weekly slots it had requested to operate daily. Even if BA had received them, they could have simply switched them for use elsewhere. genuine Intention remains unknown.
