KOKOMO, Indiana — Young scientists won nearly $9,000 in Indiana University Kokomo scholarships and awards at the 60th annual awards ceremony on Saturday (February 17)th Annual Howard County Science Fair.
Deborah Jaworski, senior mathematics lecturer and event committee chair, said the campus is pleased to be able to host the annual event for students in grades 4-12. In addition to presenting their projects, students participated in science activities in the biology lab led by biology instructor Brandon Wison and in the observatory led by physics professor Patrick Mottle.
“Advanced division students have studied the environmental impact of salt runoff into freshwater sources, discovered creative alternatives to pesticides for vineyards, and grown algae to reduce carbon footprints. He was passionate about real-world problems, such as deliberations,” Jaworski said. “Students in the junior division studied everything from rockets, robots, water filtration, electronics, geodes and slime.”
Winners in the senior division (grades 9-12) included Ava Prather, who received a $2,500 IU Kokomo Scholarship and a first-place prize of $100. Second place Samuel Martin received her $1,500 scholarship and her $75 prize. Third place winner Elise Collins was awarded a $1,000 scholarship and her $50 cash prize. All three are students at Northwestern High School.
Senior second place winners each received a $500 scholarship. They include, in alphabetical order: Megan Broker (Northwest), Ty Kidwell (Northwest), Adam Lesko (Northwest), Conal Miller (Northwest), and Mocianne Pontius (Northwest). (Western), Mr. Isaac Rousseau (Homeschool), and Mr. Gabriel Smalley (Northwest). .
Winners in the junior division, grades 4-8, each received a $30 prize. They include Cecilia Kramer (Eastern), Alydia Lewis (Eastern), Corbin Perryman (Eastern), Claire Rousseau (Homeschool), and Camryn Steele (Eastern).
Second place winners in the junior division each received a $20 prize and all were from Eastern. They include Ruby Howell, Grayson Ingle, Harper Marr, Carson Smith, and Tessa Yoder.
Canadian Prime Minister Mark and Dean of Science Christian Cholet congratulated all the students who took part.
Jaworski noted that donations were made to the Howard County Science Fair, Inc. He funds the prize.
Additional faculty committee members and volunteers included Hisako Masuda, associate professor of biochemistry; Peter Tupa, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics. Chris Carvana, assistant professor of mathematics; Marcia Gillette, part-time chemistry instructor; Linda Kraus, Senior Lecturer in Mathematics. Associate Professor of Mathematics Amelia Tebe.
IU Kokomo student volunteers Joshua Cochran, Hayley Howell, and Jacob Pearson helped organize the event, along with fellow College of Science alumni Olivia Terry and Tiffany Barnett.
Sponsors were Erics Chevrolet, Melissa A. Jarrell, DDS, The Wyman Group, Bob and Marcia Gillette, and the Jaworski family.
At Indiana University Kokomo, education is key.
