5 ways iPhone 16 Pro Max beats Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra

Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra is here. It’s spectacular. This is definitely one of the best phones you can buy, offering great performance, great photography, and amazing battery life.

It offers some features that even the iPhone 15 Pro Max doesn’t offer, such as the included S Pen and its AI tricks. But there are a few areas that could receive attention when Apple’s next big handset arrives in September.

Here are five ways the iPhone 16 Pro Max could beat the Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra if Apple plays its cards right.

A18 Pro speed

Over the years, the combination of Apple’s A-series chips and Apple manufacturing both the hardware and software has made the iPhone comfortably the fastest mobile phone.

With Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 powering the S24 Ultra, Qualcomm has made things interesting. In the Geekbench 6 benchmark, the S24 Ultra scores 2,300 in single-core and 7,249 in multi-core. For comparison, the iPhone 15 Pro Max received scores of 2,783 and 6,945, respectively.

This is just a narrow win in multi-core, and we fully expect the iPhone 16 Pro Max to pick it up with the A18 Pro chipset. According to one leaker, this chipset is so powerful that it can outperform the M1 MacBook with a score of 3,500. 8,200.

Big but light

The Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra has many features, but light isn’t one of them. The 6.8-inch body weighs 8.22 ounces.

The iPhone 15 Pro Max, on the other hand, weighs 7.8 ounces. And while the iPhone 16 Pro Max is expected to be closer to 6.9 inches, it would be quite surprising if it were heavier than Samsung’s latest.

The power of the capture button

Although actual camera performance has not been determined, Apple is reportedly planning to make significant usability upgrades to the iPhone 16 family.

Various reports have mentioned the introduction of a dedicated capture button, but Bloomberg’s Mark Garman claims it’s primarily for quickly capturing video. The Information’s report goes into more detail, claiming that the buttons are flexible enough to zoom with a swipe or focus with a light touch.

This doesn’t sound like a huge change, but it’s the kind of usability innovation that can make a big difference for budding filmmakers.

Smarter AI — no paywall threat

Galaxy AI has been very well received. As you can see in our review of the Samsung Galaxy S24 Plus, the features vary in their usefulness, but are generally well implemented and offer a glimpse into the future.

With iOS 18, Apple is likely to bring artificial intelligence to the iPhone, potentially on the iPhone 16 family of devices.

It remains to be seen whether these are better than Samsung’s efforts (though the fact that Apple is reportedly courting publishers with multi-million dollar offers for training data is reassuring), but the iPhone 16 could take away Samsung’s advances by eliminating AI so far. Must be a paid feature. This is a clear failure by Samsung, who only promised it would be free until 2025 (though there are reasons to doubt that this will happen).

And when it comes to money…

more competitive price

Thanks to a $100 price increase, Samsung Galaxy S24 Ultra prices start at $1,299.99 and rise to $1,659 if you want 1TB of storage.

It feels strange to think that Apple products are a worthy option, but here we are nonetheless. iPhone 15 Pro Max pricing starts at $1,199.99 and goes even lower if you want 1TB of storage, up to $1,599.

Perhaps Apple will price match Samsung and add $100 to the price of the iPhone 16 Pro Max. But if that’s not the case and the price stays the same for another year, that’s a big advantage for the brand.
