3 AI features iOS 18 needs to catch up with Android

The world of generative AI is filled with bots, from text and image generators to AI-powered musicians. Apple is one company notorious for being on the back foot of the generative AI train, but CEO Tim Cook is adamant that’s about to change.

Recent reports suggest that iOS 18, scheduled for release in late 2024, will be one of the company’s biggest iOS updates ever, including support for RCS and a smarter Siri. AI-powered music creation, personalized fitness and meditation coaching, and generated AI on all Siri devices would be fun, but here are the top three AI features we’d like to see in iOS 18.

1. Generative AI for context-aware Siri

Unfortunately, Siri is perhaps Apple’s biggest shortcoming in the AI ​​department. Siri is great in its own right, but it lags behind its virtual assistant competitors when it comes to intelligence. Growing consumer dissatisfaction with Siri’s limitations, combined with the popularity of generative AI, may eventually lead Apple to include generative AI in its voice assistant.

If Apple can provide Siri with generative AI, iPhone users will be able to ask the voice assistant more than “Open this app” or “Search for this on Google.” Generative AI allows users to ask Siri to draft messages, explain concepts, and provide personalized reminders for calendars, notes, or contacts.

The biggest challenge for Apple will be running large-scale language models (LLMs) on its devices, as one would expect from Apple’s long-standing focus on consumer privacy. On-device processing eliminates the need to send Siri user questions and answers to his server remotely, minimizing data exposure and increasing privacy.

2. AI-powered photo and video editing

We’ve seen how powerful generative AI can be in photo editing with Adobe Photoshop’s Generative Fill and Google Pixel’s Magic Eraser. Unfortunately, this is another example of Apple falling behind.

I’d love to see Apple combine these AI features with the iPhone’s camera as an extension of the limited photo editing options, and even video editing. Generative AI in video is not as widely used as AI image generators, as it is a tricky medium, with the exception of TikTok and Capcut filters.

3. Generating personalized text
